Plant circadian clocks increase photosynthesis, growth, survival, and competitive advantage.

چکیده
Circadian clocks are believed to confer an advantage to plants, but the nature of that advantage has been unknown. We show that a substantial photosynthetic advantage is conferred by correct matching of the circadian clock period with that of the external light-dark cycle. In wild type and in long- and short-circadian period mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana, plants with a clock period matched to the environment contain more chlorophyll, fix more carbon, grow faster, and survive better than plants with circadian periods differing from their environment. This explains why plants gain advantage from circadian control.

The Loss of the Circadian Rhythm in Photosynthesis in an Old Strain of Gonyaulax polyedra.
Cultures of Gonyaulax polyedra Stein maintained in the laboratory for 15 to 20 years, including an axenic strain isolated in 1960, have gradually lost the ability to survive in darkness. G. polyedra (70A), isolated in 1970 and maintained in a 12:12 light:dark cycle, now tolerates continuous darkness for a much shorter time than a strain isolated in 1981. I have compared the properties of strain...
متن کاملSucrose and Ethylene Signaling Interact to Modulate the Circadian Clock.
Circadian clocks drive rhythmic physiology and metabolism to optimize plant growth and performance under daily environmental fluctuations caused by the rotation of the planet. Photosynthesis is a key metabolic process that must be appropriately timed to the light-dark cycle. The circadian clock contributes to the regulation of photosynthesis, and in turn the daily accumulation of sugars from ph...
متن کاملCircadian Oscillation of the Lettuce Transcriptome under Constant Light and Light–Dark Conditions
Although, the circadian clock is a universal biological system in plants and it orchestrates important role of plant production such as photosynthesis, floral induction and growth, there are few such studies on cultivated species. Lettuce is one major cultivated species for both open culture and plant factories and there is little information concerning its circadian clock system. In addition, ...
متن کاملInteractions between circadian clocks and photosynthesis for the temporal and spatial coordination of metabolism
All plant productivity, including the food that we eat, arises from the capture of solar energy by plants. At most latitudes sunlight is available for only part of the 24 h day due to the rotation of the planet. This rhythmic and predictable alteration in the environment has driven the evolution of the circadian clock, which has an extremely pervasive influence upon plant molecular biology, phy...
متن کاملCore clock, SUB1, and ABAR genes mediate flooding and drought responses via alternative splicing in soybean.
Circadian clocks are a great evolutionary innovation and provide competitive advantage during the day/night cycle and under changing environmental conditions. The circadian clock mediates expression of a large proportion of genes in plants, achieving a harmonious relationship between energy metabolism, photosynthesis, and biotic and abiotic stress responses. Here it is shown that multiple paral...
